A lot of the information on this quest doesn't seem conclusive. The below information is the currently-known stuff.

This is where you can locate the "strange contraption."

You'll find the machine by a spring with a book on it explaining it's function. Once you use the machine by sacrificing some magical moon brew, a section of an obsidian statue, and a plague beast lord mutation core, you will receive the following message:
You add the required ingredients and activate the contraption. It rubmles and shakes and then falls silent. The water shines for a brief moment, and you feel confident that it is now much less tainted than before.

After doing that, you'll have either gained in compassion or sacrifice(If you are able to that day). Don't do it more than once per day if you're trying to gain in virtues as it seems you can only gain in them once per day.

This contraption was apparently created to assist the Solen Matriarch purify her water supply(As dictated by BNN fiction). It's not known if this quest has anything to do with Trammel Yew's swampy state or turning it back to normal. It's also not known if there is any greater reward other than gaining in virtue. At this time, you get sacrifice or compassion. Err, well that's not certain either. Having not completed the quest it's hard to say. Many people say they only gain sacrifice, and many say they only gain compassion, while others insist they get nothing.

So why do this quest? Hrmm, well, I suppose you can think of it as a gamble. If you believe there will be some result later on such as a beneficial outcome or a reward, then do it. If you think it's just a means of gaining sacrifice, you probably won't want to. Unless you have the hankering to raise sacrifice that is.
